Kailua Canoe Club takes OHCRA regatta

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

Relying on a "club-first" approach, the Kailua Canoe Club wound up in first place at the end of the John D. Kaupiko Regatta yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

More than 1,200 paddlers participated in the day-long regatta. It was the sixth of seven events this summer in the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, the state's largest paddling organization.

Kailua won only six of the 37 races in the regatta, but amassed 78 points to prevail for the second time this season.

Hui Lanakila placed second with 67 points. Outrigger, with a regatta-high eight race victories, finished third with 64 points. Lanikai, which had won four regattas this season, was fourth with 52.

Waikiki Surf Club won three races and captured the A division for smaller clubs with 19 points.

"It's a great feeling because if you look at the way we did it, the whole club contributed," said Kailua head coach Jimmy Bruhn. "It's about the overall look, not just certain areas."

The perfect example came in the youth races.

Kailua won just one of the 13 youth races, but still won the Chris Olds Memorial Trophy — awarded to the club that scores the most points in the youth races. Kailua scored at least one point in 11 of the 13 youth races and finished with 28 points in those races (only the top four teams in each race score points).

"That's pretty much what it's all about," said Vai Conner, coach of the boys 12-and-younger and 13-and-younger crews. "We have the potential to win every race, but even if we don't, we know we're going to score points."

The boys 16-and-younger crew edged Lanikai by two seconds to give Kailua an overall lead in the point standings it would not surrender the rest of the day.

"We pretty much just focus on our race," said Harrison Chang, a stroker on the victorious boys 16 crew. "But we know we're paddling for the club."

Kailua's other race victories came from a wide-range of paddlers: women's novice A, women's novice B, men 55-and-older, mixed 55-and-older, and mixed open-6.

"The biggest surprise was probably our kids," Bruhn said. "And then the rest of the club did their part to hold on."

Outrigger turned in a few surprises of its own by sweeping the prestigious senior races.

The Outrigger crew of Mary Smolenski, Paula Crabb, Donna Kahakui, Traci Phillips, Jennifer Horner and Kisi Haine completed the 1 1/2-mile women's senior race in 13 minutes, 13.62 seconds to beat Hui Nalu by 15 seconds. Hui Nalu had been undefeated in that division prior to yesterday.

The Outrigger men then won their 1 1/2-mile senior race in 11:19.99, edging Hui Lanakila by 1.14 seconds. It was the first victory this season by the Outrigger crew of Tim Twigg-Smith, Jimmy Austin, Mike Beyer, Jeff Brown, Jim Beaton and Scott Hendricks.

"We're slowly getting better and better every week," Hendricks said. "To even stay near that Hui Lanakila crew is an accomplishment in itself. To nose them out at the finish is extra special."

Lanikai's traditionally strong men's paddlers were dispersed throughout the club yesterday in an effort to qualify more crews for the Aug. 2 state championship regatta.

Yesterday's regatta and next week's O'ahu Championships are the last chances for crews to qualify for the state regatta.

"We had to sacrifice this (regatta)," said Lanikai head coach Bob Puakea. "Our goal today was to strengthen some of the crews that needed help qualifying for states."

Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a

• Kane'ohe again: The Kane'ohe Canoe Club won the Waikiki Beach Boys Regatta yesterday at Waikiki Beach for its seventh victory in eight regattas this season.

Kane'ohe won eight races and amassed 81 points. Lokahi won 12 races and finished second with 73 points. Koa Kai won the AA division with 41 points and the host Waikiki Beach Boys won the A division with 22.

Among the victories for the Waikiki Beach Boys was the women's senior race. The crew of Malia Eversole, Dana Gorecki, Jody Kono, Angela Lovitt and Meredith Takara was steered to victory by Guy Pere (because of the potential for danger in the Waikiki waves, teams are allowed to use men to steer in every race).

Lokahi placed second in the race, snapping a streak of 53 consecutive victories against Hui Wa'a competition. It was the first time since 1997 that Lokahi did not win the women's senior race.
