Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Polynesian Cultural Center is hosting its third annual "Te Mahana Hiro'a o Tahiti" (Tahiti Cultural Day). The five-day festival, which runs through Saturday, honors the Tahitian culture with dancing and drumming.

Participants will get a chance to watch solo and group dance competitions and try their own hand — or hips — at a dance workshop. "Tamariki Poerani," an accomplished group of 35 children from Tahiti, will give a special guest performance. Call 531-0244 for registration, times and dates.

Jerry seeks talent

A talent search will unfold along with the pitch for donations during the 2003 Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 on TV.

This year, "Jerry's Kids" will include singers, dancers, comedians and other acts competing in a "Stars Across America" talent search. Finalists will appear in live links from Hollywood, Chicago, New York and other locales.

The talent segments will be shown Sept. 1, with 60 million watching on TV and millions more on the Internet.

Contestants must be 18, provide their own music (live or prerecorded). To audition, send a VHS-format videotape of your performance (no more than 4 minutes) to: Jerry Lewis MDA Talent Search 2003, 7800 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. Deadline is July 22.

Local quartet at jazz festival

If you attend the Hawaii International Jazz Festival, you'll be among the first to hear live selections from the Honolulu Jazz Quartet's debut CD. The HJQ opens for guitarist Larry Coryell Friday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, as well as July 25 at the Wailea Marriott.

Together for just 1 1/2 years, the HJQ's performances have earned a dedicated local following for the veteran musicianship of bassist John Kolivas, drummer Adam Baron, pianist Dan Del Negro and saxophonist Tim Tsukiyama. More information is available at 941-9974 or hawaiijazz.com.
