Crash victim identified

A motorcyclist killed Sunday in a crash near Makaha was identified yesterday as Curtis Cabral, 47, of Mililani.

A 46-year-old woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle was in serious condition at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

Police said a car driven by an 18-year-old Wai'anae man rear-ended the motorcycle at 2:26 a.m. on Farrington Highway near Kea'au Homestead Road. The man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and was released without being charged. The accident is being investigated as a negligent-homicide case, police said.

Arson suspected in house fire

A fire yesterday that caused $21,000 damage to an abandoned Nanakuli home was intentionally set, said Honolulu Fire Department investigator Capt. Glenn Solem.

Firefighters had the Nanakuli fire at 87-117 Kahau St. under control at 1:56 a.m., 29 minutes after responding to the scene. Solem said the house had no electrical power. Damage was concentrated to the main structure. An extension to the same house was damaged about a year ago by a fire that was also deliberately set, Solem said.

Man charged in officer assault

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have charged a 21-year-old man with allegedly dragging a police officer who had stopped him for reckless driving.

Timothy Jackson, also known as Marwan Timothy Jackson, was arrested Saturday at Spencer Beach Park and charged with assaulting a police officer, reckless endangering, resisting an order to stop and other charges stemming from the July 3 incident at the Pahoa Community Center.

The officer was dragged about 30 feet with his arm caught in the car's window.

Man accused of animal cruelty

MAKAWELI, Kaua'i — A Kaua'i man accused of leaving five dogs unattended for a week or more has been charged with animal cruelty and animal desertion.

The Humane Society was called after workers at Pakala Camp discovered the dogs tied up without food or water outside a house where Aluina Kanahele had reportedly been living, said Becky Rhoades, director of the Kaua'i Humane Society.

A Rottweiler and a pit bull were emaciated, and a German shepherd mix, a Labrador mix and a brown Airedale were thin and had skin lesions when they were rescued by the Humane Society, Rhoades said.
