Honolulu's Parker McLachlin shot a 3-over-par 74 yesterday to lead Hawai'i golfers competing in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Galloway Township, N.J.
McLachlin is in a 21-way tie for 32nd in the 156-player field. The top 64 after today's second round of stroke play will qualify for match play.
Other Hawai'i golfers are: Lihu'e's Jonathan Ota (75), Hilo's Gabriel Wilson (80), Wailuku's Jay Kurisu (81), Waipahu's Guy Yamamoto (81) and 'Aiea's Troy Higashiyama (82).
Jeff Overton of Evansville, Ind., shot a record-tying 64 to take a two-stroke lead. The Indiana University junior finished with three straight birdies to equal the mark for lowest stroke-play score in the event's 77 years. Robert Gamez (1989) and Albert Ochoa (1997) share the record.
