Hilo wins youth baseball tournament

Wong's homer in the fifth gave Hilo East a 3-2 lead.
Hilo East advances to the West Regional, July 31-Aug. 6, at San Luis Obispo, Calif.
SOCCER
UH picked No. 2 in WAC: The University of Hawai'i women's team was picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference in a preseason poll of conference coaches.
The Rainbow Wahine who return forwards Natasha Kai, the WAC Player of the Year, and Arlene Devitt, a three-time all-WAC selection received one first-place vote and 50 points.
Southern Methodist was picked to defend its title, receiving seven first-place votes and 63 points.
AIR RIFLERY
Tanoue finishes ninth: Ryan Tanoue of Honolulu finished ninth in the 10-meter competition at the World Cup Championships earlier this month in South Korea.
Tanoue, who attends the University of Nevada, was the top U.S. shooter with a score of 594 and had two perfect targets. Ye Yao of China won with a score of 596.
GOLF
Kalilikane named HPU coach: Mark Kalilikane has been hired as Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's golf coach, athletic director Russell Dung announced yesterday.
Kalilikane has worked as an instructor at Island Golf at the Ala Wai Golf Course, Mililani Golf Club, and Mililani High.
RUNNING
Great way to finish: Participants in tomorrow's Nike Town marathlon clinic training session will have an incentive.
The first 10 people to finish will receive a foot bath and massage.
The run starts at 6 p.m. in front of Nike Town and is open to the public.
WATER POLO
Eighth-best in nationals: Hawai'i teams competing in the Youth (ages 17-18) and Cadet (ages 15-16) divisions of the U.S. Water Polo National Age-Group Tournaments both placed eighth.
The tournament was held in Boca Raton, Fla., July 3-6.
A Hawai'i team in the Development (ages 12-14) division finished 11th in a July 11-13 tournament in San Clemente, Calif.
