THE LEFT LANE
Comedian Attell turns O'ahu romp into show

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Comedy Central
Comedy Central's "Insomniac with David Attell" casts its raunchy eye on Honolulu at 7 tomorrow night, repeating at 9 p.m. The adult comedy series is in its fourth season, but this is the first time Attell has come to O'ahu.

Comedy Central spent three days in December gathering footage for the half-hour show. Attell, a stand-up (and often foul-mouthed) comedian, opens the episode at Hank's Café before hitting the town. Among the highlights: Attell patrols Honolulu with a private investigator, sings a duet with Don Ho at the Beachcomber Hotel, drag races in a taxi cab and night surfs in Waikiki.

Transform your teen into a 'good' citizen

How do you get students to volunteer? To follow the news? To vote?

Joel Westheimer — who teaches and writes on democracy and social justice issues and directs Democratic Dialogue, a center for research and dialogue on civic education and democratic change — will lecture on "Educating the 'Good' Citizen: The Politics of Teaching Democracy."

His free talk — part of the University of Hawai'i Outreach College's annual Shiro Amioka lecture series — will be 7 tonight in the HIG Auditorium on the Manoa campus. Information: www.outreach.hawaii.edu or 956-8246.

Critic departs to teach dance

Advertiser dance critic Ana Paula Höfling has won a spot as a highly regarded New York Times Professional Fellow at the American Dance Festival's 2003 Institute for Dance Criticism.

The Institute finished its three-week run July 11. Fellows observed dance companies from France (Compagnie Maguy Marin and La Maison), India (Nrityagram Dance Ensemble), Japan (Dairakudakan) and the United States (Twyla Tharp Dance, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Eiko and Koma, and Shen Wei Dance Arts).

The bad news: Höfling has accepted a position teaching dance at the University of Wyoming and will not be reviewing dance for us anymore. She's been an enthusiastic contributor to The Advertiser's pages, and we'll miss her.

Wanted: Labrado fans for 'Island Girl' video

LABRADO
Moloka'i teen sensation Darrell Labrado's "I Want My Island Girl" has bounced up Billboard's dance single charts. Now he's ready for his video closeup. An MTV crew, led by producers Lorenzo Stamos and Pierre Angelo, are due to film the video here, starting July 23 on O'ahu, July 25 on Maui and July 28 on Moloka'i.

Labrado fans, ages 16 through 26, may sign up for a chance to be in the shoot. The applicants should have long hair, show a friendly disposition and weigh no more than 120 pounds. Check the downloadable waiver form at www.alohaentgroup.com. Those selected will be notified.
