QUICK BITES
Maui onion recipes?

By Wanda A. Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

The Maui Onion Festival is calling for entries in its recipe contest. This year, organizers have simplified the competition with a single category — entrees — with divisions for professional chefs and for home cooks. The event is Aug. 2 (professional competition) and 3 (amateur) at the Whalers Village in Ka'anapali. There is no cost to enter. Entry forms are available online at whalersvillage.com; forms must be submitted by July 28. Prizes are Whalers Village gift certificates. Information: (808) 661-4567.

Celebrations

Brew Moon at Ward Centre is celebrating American Beer Month with the first Beer Dinner since the restaurant came under local ownership. It's set for July 28 and features a four-course dinner with dishes by executive chef Matthew Glick and brewmaster Greg Yount. The $50 cost includes a souvenir glass. Reservations: 593-0088.

Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Kihei Town Center is celebrating its first anniversary with a special champagne and sake tasting reception followed by a six-course fixed-price menu including wine and dessert on Saturday. Six seating times are available from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Six chefs from various restaurants in the Sansei 'ohana have designed dishes for the event, and there will be entertainment and a silent auction benefiting the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center. Cost: $85. Reservations: (808) 879-0004.

Japanese favorites

A Japanese publication, Chikyu no Arukikata/Hawaii Globetrotter Travel Guide Book, has released the results of a recent online survey of 1,604 adults about their favorite Hawai'i restaurants. The average respondent had been to Hawai'i twice. The most popular spot: Eggs 'n Things with Yummy Korean Bar-B-Q second. Also in the top ten: Kua 'Ana Sandwich Shop, Perry's Smorgy, Alan Wong's Restaurant, Mariposa at Neiman Marcus, Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company, The Shorebird, Tanaka of Tokyo and Roy's Restaurant. Tidbits

Food-related news bites:

  • It's your annual chance to buy Kanemitsu Bakery bread without going to Moloka'i — the Moloka'i Festival at Ward Warehouse from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday with music, Moloka'i coffee, salt and that wonderful bread, as well as handicrafts.
  • Papa John's Pizza was voted No. 1 in customer satisfaction for the fourth year in a row among national fast-food restaurants in a survey conducted by the National Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan Business School. The annual results are based on a quarterly survey of about 16,000 customers. There are 14 Papa John's restaurants on O'ahu.
  • The Terrace Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on Maui has opened a new Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar, in keeping with increased interest in traditional cocktails.
  • Marriott International has honored JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa's executive chef Randal Ishizu with an Award of Culinary Excellence, one of only six chefs of more than 450 in the chain so honored. Ishizu also has won third place in the national Prosciutto di Parma Winner's Circle recipe contest.
