Wai Sinn Char, 101, founder of Chinese Jaycees

Wai Sinn Char, a retired Honolulu dentist and founder of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, died July 3. He was 101 years old.

Wai Sinn Char had a dental practice in Honolulu between 1934 and 1979.
Char also founded the Women's Auxiliary of the Honolulu County Dental Society, the Chinese Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Hawai'i chapter of the Shaolin Temple.

Char opened a dental practice on Kukui Street in 1934 and retired in 1979. Before opening his Honolulu practice, Char lived in Shanghai, where he was the director of the dental department of the Chinese Red Cross and was appointed dental examiner for the city of Shanghai.

Char attended McKinley High School and graduated from Creighton Dental College in Nebraska in 1926.

Char is survived by his wife, Bertha; three sons, David, John and Douglas; two daughters, Cynthia Schwab and Claudia Loo; four sisters, Kwai Lan Goo, Kwai Sin Char, Irene Kwai Ngit Tyau and Grace Kwai Yau Wong; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at Nuuanu Mortuary, service 10 a.m.; burial 10:45 a.m. at Nuuanu Memorial Park.
