McLachlin advances in Public Links play

Honolulu's Parker McLachlin shot an even-par 71 yesterday to become the lone Hawai'i golfer to advance in the U.S. Amateur Public LInks Championship at Galloway Township, N.J.

McLachlin, a Punahou School and UCLA graduate, had a two-round total of 145 on the 7,127-yard Blue Heron Pines Golf Club's East Course. He finished in a seven-way tie for 13th in the 156-player field and advanced to today's first round of match play, along with 63 others. The cutoff score was 152.

McLachlin will play Danny Green (73—150) of Jackson, Tenn., at 5:24 a.m. HST.

Five other golfers from Hawai'i failed to qualify for match play. They were: Lihu'e's Jonathan Ota (78—153), 'Aiea's Troy Higashiyama (75—157), Hilo's Gabriel Wilson (77—157), Wailuku's Jay Kurisu (79—160) and Waipahu's Guy Yamamoto (83—164).

Jeffrey Overton of Evansville, Ind., led the field with a 68—132 total.



WAIALAE WOMEN'S

• Kim, Kimura take top honors: Mona Kim won low-gross honors and Michiko Kimura was the low-net winner at the 47th Waialae Women's Invitational.

Kim shot a final-round 77 yesterday for a 158 total at the Waialae Country Club.

Kimura, who carries a 24 handicap, shot a net score of 61—129.
