Maui, Hilo teams win Little League state titles

Central East Maui and Hilo National won Little League state baseball championships earlier this week.

Central East Maui defeated 'Aiea, 3-2, to capture the Big League (ages 16-18) title Sunday at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.

No game details were reported. 'Aiea had advanced with a 7-3 win over Keaukaha.

Central East Maui advances to the West Regional, July 26 to 30, at Billings, Mont.

Hilo National defeated Halawa, 2-1, to win the Seniors (ages 14-16) title Monday at Walter Victor Stadium in Hilo.

Matt Haasenritter was the winning pitcher.

Hilo, which forced the deciding game by beating Halawa, 11-0, earlier in the day, advances to the Division I Tournament in Portland, Ore., July 25 to 31.

Myles Ioane had three hits and was the winning pitcher in the first game. Dane Inouye added two hits.

Hilo will play 'Aiea today in the Juniors (ages 13-14) state championship game at 3 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

'Aiea must win to force a winner-take-all final that will follow.



GOLF

• Kajihara qualifies: Lisa Kajihara of Makawao, Maui, qualified for the 2003 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship on Aug. 4 to 10 at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.

Kajihara, 17, shot a 4-over-par 76 in qualifying at the Mid-Pacific Country Club yesterday.

Mariko Shimozaki, 19, of Kihei, shot 77 to become the first alternate.

Other scores included Desiree Ting (78), Ayaka Kaneko (80), Kayla Morinaga (81), Jenna Seki (82) and Stacie Nishimoto (85).



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Rainbows to compete: Current and former University of Hawai'i volleyball players Tony Ching, Daniel Rasay, Allen Allen, Maja Gustin and Lily Kahumoku will be among the participants in this weekend's O'ahu Volleyball Association's Men's and Women's Beach Doubles Championships at Queen's Beach.

Play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and will also include AVP professionals Janice Harrer and Tanya Fuamatu.

Registration is $30 per team in advance, and $40 on event day. There is no admission charge.
