Students make cable TV program

Wai'anae High School students participating in a six-week video training program have produced a cable TV program on homelessness in Hawai'i. The show, including a live panel and call-in discussion, will air today and tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. on 'Olelo Community Television, Channel 52.

The program is being produced at 'Olelo's satellite facility at Wai'anae High School. Panelists include State Reps. Maile Shimabukuro, D-45th (Wai'anae, Makaha) and Michael Kahikina, D-44th (Honokai Hale, Nanakuli, Ma'ili), University of Hawai'i Director of Hawaiian Studies Lilikala Kame'eleihiwa, Honolulu Police Department Capt. Gregory Lefcourt, Bumpy Kanahele, UH Professor John Osorio and Patty Teruya representing City Councilman Mike Gabbard.

Seventh graders must get shots

State health officials are asking parents to start thinking about back-to-school immunization shots for seventh-grade students.

By the first day of school, all seventh graders must show proof of three hepatitis B shots, two MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) shots and one or two varicella (chickenpox) shots.

If the immunizations are not completed by the first day of class, the student must show documentation that an appointment is scheduled to complete the required immunizations. Without either of these documents, the students will not be permitted to attend school.

The completed seventh-grade immunization record, known as the yellow card, is required by state law.

Students are encouraged to turn in their cards to the school office over the summer.

Families who do not have a doctor or are uninsured and need to find an immunization clinic in their neighborhood should call Aloha United Way by dialing 211.
