Ex-UH offensive lineman Fuata will sign with Jets

Former University of Hawai'i offensive lineman Lui Fuata said he's planning to sign with the New York Jets tomorrow.

Fuata, who is recuperating from a left knee injury suffered during the Alabama game Nov. 31, said the Jets will place him on the physically-unable-to-perform list, meaning he would draw a salary, rehabilitate and participate in team meetings with the Jets but likely not play this season.

"There's no expectations to play at all this season," said Fuata, who will turn 23 tomorrow. "They're just going to rehab me until I get to 100 percent. After the season they're going to send me to Europe."

Fuata said he's leaving Hawai'i today and will reach New York tomorrow morning. He must report to camp which starts Sunday.

"I'm very excited," Fuata said. "I'm just kind of sad that I'm leaving Hawai'i, but I'm very excited to get a new start in New York and get back to playing good football again."

Fuata's agent, Tom Kleine, director of operations at JL Sports, said the Jets envision Fuata as a "long-term investment." Fuata said he could earn at least $5,000 a month with the Jets this season.

Fuata said the Jets are looking for him to play center or guard and added, "they told me it was up to me whichever position I feel most comfortable at."
