Volunteers will spiff up schools

Advertiser Staff

Volunteers will tackle repairs at three O'ahu schools tomorrow, saving the state an estimated $252,000.

Hawai'i's 3R's, a non-profit group tackling repairs since 2001, organized tomorrow's projects, dubbing the work "sweat equity." Parents, staff and community members will come together to do the jobs.

At Mililani Uka Elementary, volunteers will continue to clean and finish five portables and one classroom. They previously painted the exteriors of three portables.

Volunteers at Waipahu Intermediate will paint the interior of two buildings and the outside of a third.

And at Jefferson Elementary School in Honolulu, volunteers will resurface a playing area.

Hawai'i's 3Râs was begun by U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to bring private contributions and volunteers together to reduce the state's huge repair and maintenance backlog. At the time, that backlog was estimated at $640 million but state efforts have reduced it to $450 million.
