Two men indicted in Salt Lake case

An O'ahu grand jury indicted Arthur Birano, 31, and Michael Thomas Randall, 28, on Wednesday in connection with a case involving the 2001 slaying of Darryl Lee, a self-employed contractor, in his Salt Lake residence at 3405 Kahikolu Way.

Both men are charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and two firearm offenses. Birano is also charged with second-degree murder. Lee was shot in the chest and abdomen sometime between April 26 and May 4.

Birano is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for an April 2001 home-invasion robbery in Makiki.

Man imprisoned after standoff

Sheriff's deputies took custody of Michael Gaspar, who was involved in a 5 1/2-hour standoff in Waipahu on Tuesday, when he was released from St. Francis Medical Center-West yesterday.

Gaspar was arrested on a parole-revocation warrant and spent last night at O'ahu Community Correctional Center before being transferred today to Halawa Correctional Facility.

Tuesday's standoff at Nova Sunset Villas Apartments ended when Gaspar collapsed and lost consciousness after taking pills, possibly prescription pain-killers. Gaspar's wife and 7-month-old daughter were in the bedroom with him during the standoff.

Child Protective Services is conducting an investigation concerning the safety of the child.
