THE HIKING REPORT
Makua Rim hike explores North Shore environs

By Richard McMahon
Special to the Advertiser

LOCATION: This 4-mile loop hike begins at the Peacock Flats Campground, above Mokule'ia on the north shore of O'ahu.

Access to the campground is via Peacock Flats Access Road, a gated paved road, which begins at the northeast corner of the coconut palm "farm" 2.5 miles west of Waialua High School on Farrington Highway.

It is 3.2 miles on the Access Road from the highway to Peacock Flats, and only bicycles and foot traffic can pass around the locked gate.

DESCRIPTION: From the campground entrance, turn left on the dirt road bordering the campground. After about 20 uphill minutes the road becomes the Mokule'ia Trail.

The route continues uphill until it reaches an open clearing on the right with a small roofed structure, open on all sides. The water in the catchment system is normally unfit for drinking.

Walk around the structure on the left, proceed through the trees on a faint path which leads uphill from the clearing to a fence on the edge of Makua Valley. Turn right, and follow the fence.

As you proceed, cross the fence only at stiles provided for this purpose.

At just under a mile from the roofed structure, you reach an open grassy area where the fence divides at right angles. Follow the fence leading right, but look for a stile which provides a crossing over the fence you have been following. The trail soon rejoins the fenceline, which is on your left.

After climbing two small rocky peaks, and crossing back and forth over the fence, the trail descends on steep switchbacks until it reaches the former Nike site, still in partial use as a communications station.

Turn right on the paved road and return to the campground.

SPECIAL COMMENTS: A free permit is required to camp at Peacock Flats and is obtained from Department of Forestry and Wildlife, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Room 131, Honolulu, HI 96813, phone 587-0166.

No permit is needed to hike the trail if done as a day hike.
