Catch of the day

Advertiser Staff

Jesse Yonover, of Hawai'i Kai, celebrated his 14th birthday by hauling in three mahimahi and one ahi (left photo) with his father, Rob Yonover. "We go fishing a lot, like every weekend," Yonover said. The four fish that Jesse caught on his birthday at Penguin Banks ranged from 8 pounds to 22 pounds. "The 22-pounder . . . it just ran harder than the other ones. It was jumping." Yonover got a taste of a truly "big one" just a week later with his uncle, Kit Halderson, when he landed a 160-pound ahi (right photo) at Barbers Point. "No one was catching any fish," Jesse said. "I single-handedly reeled that ahi in." Yonover said it took him 30 minutes to land the fish, which is "maybe even a little bigger" than the 5-foot-5 teen. "That was my first big one. It ran three-fourths of my line out."
