Reality show seeks local maid

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

"Maid in America," a reality series on women in the hotel housekeeping field, will hold auditions Aug. 11 in a Waikiki hotel, to select a possible Hawai'i candidate.

'Maid in America' casting call

• When: 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 11

• Where: Radisson Hotel Waikiki Prince Kuhio, 2500 Kuhio Ave.

• Eligibility: Women only, between 21 and 30, U.S. citizen, fluent in English, employed as a housekeeper or related job (janitor, chambermaid, etc.) for at least the past six months

The prime-time series, expected to air during the November sweeps on the Fox network, will be more of a pageant that glamorizes the cleaning profession, than a feat of physical skills or bizarre appetite for bugs.

Finalists will be flown to Los Angeles, to undergo a fantasy makeover, then compete for cash and other prizes.

It was not clear if the reality TV series was inspired by the Jennifer Lopez film, "Maid in Manhattan," which glamorized the work of a maid in a posh New York hotel.

"We're casting maids and housekeeping professionals in eight or nine markets to participate in this new Universal Television prime-time reality show," said Andy Hirsch, Universal casting director.

Hirsh said that besides Honolulu, the search will include Atlanta, New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver and Seattle.

Only women are eligible, and applicants must appear in their uniforms at the time of the audition.

Those unable to make the live audition may send a videotape.
