The Kane'ohe Canoe Club Boys 18 crew (Seth Ramolete, Kawika Kahiapo, Cory Siqueira, Jonathan Ukauka, Justin Silva and Safea Kahiapo) capped an undefeated season with a win in the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Kane'ohe Canoe Club capped a memorable year with a memorable victory yesterday.

On the year of its 30th anniversary, Kane'ohe also matured into a dominant champion, winning the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a Championship Regatta yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Kane'ohe scored 86 points in 36 races to edge perennial power Lokahi by four points. Kane'ohe, which won the Hui Wa'a title for only the third time, won eight of the nine Hui Wa'a regattas this season.

"It's an awesome feeling," said Kane'ohe head coach Clint Anderson. "This is only our third (Hui Wa'a) championship, so it's not like we do it every year. We can say we're the (Hui Wa'a) champs now."

Kane'ohe's only other Hui Wa'a championships came in 1980 and 1999. Lokahi had won 15 of the last 16 Hui Wa'a titles, including the last three.

"We've been winning a lot this year, but this is still a big thing for this club," Anderson said.

As they have all season, the Kane'ohe youth paddlers came up big again yesterday. In the 13 youth races, Kane'ohe won eight and placed second in the other five. The kids alone accounted for 55 points.

"Everybody first or second, you can not ask for more than that," Anderson said.

The Kane'ohe boys won five races (12s, 13s, 14s, 15s and 18s), while the girls added three victories (13s, 15s and 18s).

"It was kind of unbelievable to watch all the other crews keep winning," said Dane Kimokeo, a member of the winning boys 15 crew. "We knew we had to go in and keep it going."

Many of the Kane'ohe youth crews put in extra practice sessions in the days leading to yesterday.

"We always practice hard going up wind, but we went real hard this week," said Treasure Watanabe, a member of the winning girls 18 crew. "It was such a good feeling (to win). This is our family so we all share it together."

Not to be overshadowed, the Kane'ohe adults did their part to hold off the powerful Lokahi adults.

Kane'ohe won the men's novice B, men's 55-and-older, mixed 45-and-older and men's open-4 races.

"What the kids gave us was good, but we still had to respond," said Junior Parrilla, coach of the Kane'ohe adults. "Fortunately, we came through with just enough."

The most surprising of the adult victories was the men's open-4. Until yesterday, Koa Kai had been undefeated in that division this year.

Yesterday, the Kane'ohe crew of Shawn Alvarez, Markham Young, Dean Kaluhiwa and Scott Akau beat Koa Kai by two seconds. It was the 35th race of the day, and clinched the overall victory for Kane'ohe.

"The kids been carrying us the past couple years," Young said. "We wanted to start doing our part."

Just like the youth paddlers, the Kane'ohe adults put in extra practice time last week.

"Usually we only (practice) two days a week," Young said. "This time we went four days."

Kane'ohe could have finished with a more comfortable margin, but it was penalized five points midway through the regatta for a lane violation.

"I gotta be honest, I was worried," Anderson said. "Five points is so valuable."

Lokahi almost took advantage, and made the regatta interesting until the end.

"I feel like we made all the right moves," said Lokahi head coach Robert Viernes. "They just got us by four points."

Lokahi won nine races, including a sweep of the prestigious senior races.

The Lokahi crew of Jenn Thompson, Bozo Vierra, Dy Valdez, Karen Dunai, Theresa Gerry and Iwa Bush won the 1›-mile senior women's race by 31 seconds. It was an amazing 14th consecutive Hui Wa'a championship for Lokahi in that division.

The Lokahi senior men's crew of Christopher Tseu, Eddie Davis, Viernes, Michael Cushnie, Earl Cobb Jr. and Terry Hamamoto then won their 1›-mile race by nine seconds.

The senior races cover the longest distances in canoe regattas.

"Lokahi had us running all the way to the end," Parrilla said. "It took a big-time effort to beat them."

Viernes said: "At least we know what we need to work on for next year — kids. Somehow we need to get more kids to come out because that's where we need to make up the points."

Perhaps lost in the Kane'ohe-Lokahi battle, Koa Kai capped a dominant season of its own yesterday by scoring 30 points to win the AA division for medium-sized clubs. Koa Kai won the AA division at every regatta this season.

"Everybody keeps telling us to move up, but we don't have the numbers to compete with the big clubs," said Koa Kai head coach Joe Kim. "Unless we get more paddlers, we're happy with what we're doing."

Waikiki Beach Boys had a strong showing in the women's races to win the A division for small clubs with 23 points. Waikiki Beach Boys won the women's novice B, freshman and sophomore races.

Yesterday's regatta was the last chance for Hui Wa'a clubs to qualify for the Aug. 2 state championship regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association will stage its championship regatta today at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
