UH FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Warriors to travel more, but spend less in airfare than in '02

Although the University of Hawai'i football team is scheduled to play six road games this season, one more than in 2002, it will spend $20,000 less in airfare this year.

The savings will come by lumping the road games against Southern California Sept. 13 and Nevada-Las Vegas Sept. 19 into one trip and flying commercial for games against Tulsa Oct. 4 and Louisiana Tech Oct. 18.

Last year, UH took four roundtrips by charters and one by commercial for a total cost of $460,000 for five road games. It cost UH $96,000 for each charter roundtrip, $20,000 more than a commercial roundtrip fare.

This year, UH will use charter flights for the trips to USC/UNLV, San Jose State Nov. 1 and Nevada Nov. 15. Counting the commercial flights to Tulsa and Louisiana Tech, UH will spend about $440,000 in airfare this year.

2003 SCHEDULE

  • Aug. 30 — Appalachian State
  • Sept. 6 — Open
  • Sept. 13 — at USC
  • Sept. 19 — at UNLV
  • Sept. 27 — Rice
  • Oct. 4 — at Tulsa
  • Oct. 11— Fresno State
  • Oct. 18 — at La. Tech
  • Oct. 25 — Texas-El Paso
  • Nov. 1 — at San Jose State
  • Nov. 8 — Open
  • Nov. 15 — at Nevada
  • Nov. 22 — Army
  • Nov. 29 — Alabama
  • Dec. 6 — Boise State
UH explored the possibility of selling seats to the public on charter flights to offset the football team's travel costs. But UH associate athletic director Tom Sadler told reporters Friday that the school could not reserve charter flights on a larger airplane.

The Warriors have crafted a plan to practice away from opponent's spies on the Mainland. After the USC game in Los Angeles, UH will train in nearby Ontario, Calif., before traveling to Las Vegas on the eve of the game against the UNLV.

For the game against Louisiana Tech, UH will practice in Houston for two days before arriving in Ruston, La., on the eve of the game.

• Lining up: Five of the offensive linemen who signed letters of intent in February apparently have been cleared to play for the Warriors this season. They are DeJuan Gatling of Silverado High in California, Jeremy Inferrera of Saint Louis School, Michael Lafaele of Farrington High, Larry Sauafea of Samoana High in American Samoa and Hercules Satele of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. UH is awaiting approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse on another UH recruit.

Mike Cavanaugh, who coaches the UH offensive linemen, said the starters entering next month's training camp are: left tackle Samson Satele, left guard Shayne Kajioka, center Derek Faavi, right guard Uriah Moenoa and right tackle Dane Uperesa. Cavanaugh said the 6-foot-4 Uperesa, a second-year freshman, has bulked up to 315 pounds.

Ryan Santos, a fourth-year junior who played tackle in spring practice, will move to right guard, and Tala Esera, a converted defensive lineman, will compete at right tackle. Shaun Frederick, a backup middle blocker on the volleyball team, is trying out at left tackle. Frederick is 6 feet 8 and 260 pounds.

Cavanaugh also acknowledged he has been approached about writing a book. He has not decided if he will accept.
