THE LEFT LANE
Auto sing-along

Advertiser Staff

Far be it from us to suggest that author David Schiller has finally managed, with his new book "Car-i-oke," to combine two of life's most exquisite tortures: long car rides with the family and listening to other people sing. Heck, we can't even get past the way the title perpetuates that galling mispronunciation of karaoke.

No doubt some of you will welcome this attempt to turn the family car into a karaoke bar (minus, we hope, the booze and cigarettes). The book comes with a CD of 15 instrumental backgrounds for popular songs, lyrics, travel trivia, and activity suggestions.

Still, we're betting that after a week of Dad belting out "Proud Mary" on the long drive down Kam Highway, you'll never criticize morning radio again.

M&Ms get cosmic

M&Ms get groovy this summer, sporting a psychedelic new package.

In its honor, 50,000 of the 200 million packages produced contain groovy M&Ms — the keys to super cool prizes, including $5,000 every summer and a summer supply of the hard-shelled sweets.

The bag's artwork — created by Michael Rios, best known for his Santana album covers — represents the first time M&M has contracted an artist to redesign the whole package.

Sweet.

Tell us about summer

We love our summers in Hawai'i — and don't try to tell us our Islands don't have a summer. It's a subtle distinction, but it's there, in things like fresh lychee, later daylight hours and rush hour without as much rush.

Help us capture it by sharing your summer joys. What do you treasure or try to get done during the summertime? Call 525-8035 or write islandlife@honoluluadvertiser.com by Friday. Please keep your responses to fewer than 50 words, and include your name, neighborhood and daytime phone number.
