Viloria fights on beach today

PISMO BEACH, Calif. — Waipahu's Brian Viloria fights today on an ESPN2 "Battle by the Sea" card where the ring will be set up on the sand.

"Hopefully, the only wave that hits will be one Brian starts," said Gary Gittelsohn, Viloria's manager.

An ESPN spokesman said Viloria's scheduled 12-round main event bout is expected to be shown "about" 5 p.m. Hawai'i time, depending on how long the other bouts on the six-bout card last.

The unbeaten Viloria (12-0, 7 knockouts) defends his World Boxing Council Youth flyweight title against Luis Trencio Doria (17-8-1, 10 KOs) of Columbia.

Doria is a former International Boxing Federation Latin America light flyweight champion.

"After seeing this fight I'll be able to make a more educated decision on where Brian goes from here," Gittelsohn said. "The game plan — if Brian looks as good as I hope he will — is that we would look for a world championship fight for him in the next eight to 12 months."

Viloria arrived in Pismo Beach, 188 miles north of Los Angeles, yesterday afternoon weighing in at 112 pounds and was due to check out the setup at the Sea Venture Hotel.

Gittelsohn said a makeshift outdoor arena seating 1,600 is being assembled for the card.
