Gateway expands into home theater

Gateway continues its push into the family room with the launch of two home-theater systems and a progressive-scan DVD player with wireless connectivity to a PC. Priced at about $500, the KAS-103 Gateway Home Theater System features four two-way satellite speakers, a center channel speaker and a subwoofer. The pricier KAS-203 costs about $700 and sports four full-range satellite speakers, a subwoofer, a center channel speaker that delivers enhanced bass, and surround sound. Gateway also is selling a DVD player that doubles as a digital media device. It can retrieve content from a PC via a wired Ethernet connection or an 802.11b wireless network. The Gateway Connected DVD player costs $250.

Software reduces risks of surfing Net

Winferno Software touts its "Secure IE 2003" program as a faster, safer way to surf the Internet. The title, which works in conjunction with Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, blocks unauthorized pop-up ads, protects your browser from hackers, and tunes up browser settings for faster dial-up and broadband connections. Other tools let you browse dozens of Web pages at a time, save a secure server page displaying an online transaction receipt, and block cookies. The Windows-based title costs about $40.
