BOISE, Idaho The University of Hawai'i football team has been ranked No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference preseason media poll, the conference announced tonight.
The Warriors, who were 10-4 last season, received 227 points and 12 first-place votes in a poll of 25 sportswriters and sportscasters.
"It's nice, but I don't put a whole lot into these things," UH coach June Jones said. "We've worked hard, but right now we haven't done anything on the field. We're still 0-0."
Jones recalled that in his first season at UH, in 1999, "we were picked last and we went out and won the whole thing."
Boise State, last year's champion, was second with 223 points and nine No. 1 votes.
Fresno State was third with 212 points and four first-place votes.
Boise State quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie was voted the preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Nevada defensive end Jorge Cordova was chosen as Defensive Player of the Year.
