Federal grant to help wetland restoration
Associated Press
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded the state a $75,000 grant to restore wetlands at the Hamakua Marsh in Kailua, officials said yesterday.
The grant is part of $1.5 million being awarded to Hawai'i, California, Arizona, Nevada and the Pacific islands for wetland protection.
The state will use the money for efforts at the Hamakua State Wildlife Sanctuary in Windward O'ahu to re-establish habitats for native water birds and migratory shore birds. The program also is intended to promote community stewardship of the wetlands.
