28 receive Byrd scholarships

Twenty-eight recent Hawaii high school graduates have been awarded the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. The federally financed scholarship program provides up to $1,500 for the first year of college and is renewable for three years.

The recipients are Elizabeth Au of Iolani School; Rachel Bradshaw of Iolani School; Yun-Ja Chen of Punahou School; Shannon Chow of Roosevelt High School; David Choy of Iolani School; Brent Kakesako of Iolani School; Kimberly Loo of Iolani School; Adam Murayama of Iolani School; Nicole Sakai of Pearl City High School; Noah Sakimura of Kalani High School; Stephanie Speirs of Iolani School; Kevin Takasaki of Punahou School; Cameron Taketa of Hawaii Baptist Academy; Anne Yeung of Iolani School; Jason Baum of Maui High School; Jane Chung of Moanalua High School; Heidi Fink of Kalaheo High School; Eric Fujikawa of Kaua'i High School; Janelle Fukumoto of Iolani School; Jacquelyn Grace of Castle High School; Jessica Hara of Hilo High School; Matthew Jachowski of Maui High School; Kambrie Kato of Hawaii Baptist Academy; Blake Kurisu of Waiakea High School; Megan Nakashima of King Kekaulike High School; Milo Smith of King Kekaulike High School; Samuel Ulin of Seabury Hall; and Aiko Yamashiro of Castle High School.


Program grads receive support

Three recent graduates of the Junior Achievement high school program will begin college in the fall with scholarships from several organizations.

Tasha Agunat, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, plans to major in political science at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. She has received a $1,000 scholarship from We, The Women of Hawaii.

Elston Fujimoto, a graduate of Hilo High School, plans to major in elementary education at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. He has received a $500 scholarship from the Hawaii Venture Capitol Association.

Corey Johnson, a graduate of Hilo High School, will attend Harvard. He has received a $750 scholarship from the Sales & Marketing Executives of Honolulu.


NFL scholarship recipient named

Junior Achievement of Hawaii Inc. has awarded its second NFL Charities Pro Bowl Scholarship to Lourence Tolentino, a 2003 graduate of Kea'au High School who plans to major in automotive engineering and business at Hawai'i Community College. He played defensive end and tackle on the Kea'au High football team for four years.

The NFL scholarship is unique to Hawai'i, which hosts the Pro Bowl each year. For more information call 545-1777.


USA Funds honors student

Nicole E. Young, a 2003 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, is a recipient of a $1,500 scholarship from USA Funds, the nation's largest education-loan guarantor.


Bank executive named fellow

JoAnn Mattson was selected by the Asian Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute as one of 12 fellows for its 2003 National Fellows Leadership Program. The program will provide 21 days of training designed to guide fellows to further develop skills as ethical and caring community leaders. She is assistant vice president and manager of City Bank's electronic funds transfer department.


Castle & Cooke aids students

Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii recently donated $2,500 to Waipahu Intermediate School to help sponsor eight students who are representing Hawai'i at the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C.
