Storms postpone U.S. Juniors 2nd round

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Thunderstorms and heavy rain postponed the second day of play at the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship before about half the field had completed their rounds yesterday.

Michelle Wie went par-bogey before thunderstorms postponed the second round of the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.

Honolulu's Michelle Wie, 13, a co-leader after the first day at two-under-par 69, had just teed off on her third hole of the day when play was suspended. Starting from the 10th tee, Wie had parred the 10th and bogeyed the 11th with her only three-putt green in two days.

Hilo's Amanda Wilson was the only Hawai'i player to finish the second round. She shot a 4-over 75 and was at 9-over for the tournament.

After a 2-hour delay, officials decided not to resume play.

"I'm happy we didn't have to go back out," said Wie, who won the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship four weeks ago. "I'd rather wait and play again tomorrow."

The 79 players in the field of 156 who hadn't completed their second round will resume play today. The top 64 will advance to the first round of match play this afternoon.

Paula Creamer, of Pleasanton, Calif., who shared the first-day lead with Wie, finished with a 2-over 73 for a two-day total of 142, one behind Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff of Toms River, N.J., the clubhouse leader at 70-71-141.
