Islanders' Klaneski is defensive player of week

Hawaiian Islanders defensive specialist Eddie Klaneski has been named ADT National Defensive Player of the Week by arenafootball2.

KLANESKI
Klaneski recorded five solo tackles, three assists, two pass breakups and two interceptions in a 34-26 win over the San Diego Riptide last Friday.

The Islanders (10-5) will host the Bakersfield Blitz (7-7-1) Sunday in the regular-season finale for both teams. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Islanders clinched the National West Division last week and will host a first-round playoff game Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Season ticket holders may purchase their seats for the playoff game tomorrow through July 28 at the Neal Blaisdell Center box office.

On July 29, all unsold tickets will go on sale to the general public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ticket prices are $22.50 for suite level; $15 lower bowl; $10 upper level; $7 ages 7-17 (upper level only).



SOCCER

• UH's Kai voted WAC preseason player of year: University of Hawai'i sophomore Natasha Kai has been tabbed Preseason Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-WAC forward for the 2003 season in voting by conference coaches yesterday.

Kai was the only Rainbow Wahine named to the first team.

Last season, the Kahuku High graduate was the first player in conference history to be named Player and Freshman of the Year in the same season.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season Aug. 29 against Arizona State.



VOLLEYBALL

• U.S. women beat Japan: The United States edged Japan yesterday for its second straight victory at the World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament in Gioia del Colle, Italy.

Keba Phipps led the Americans to a 24-26, 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12 victory in Pool A.

A day earlier, the United States defeated Cuba, 25-22, 25-19, 25-14.

Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg is setting for the U.S. Former University of Hawai'i All-America Heather Bown is a reserve middle blocker.

Defending champion Russia bounced back from an opening loss, downing Thailand, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, yesterday in Pool B. The Russians lost to South Korea in their opener.



GOLF

• Iyoki wins senior tourney: Mike Iyoki shot a one-over-par 73 to claim a one-stroke victory over Rodney Acia at yesterday's Aloha Section PGA Club Car/Pacific Machinery Senior Club Professional Championship at Leilehua Golf Course.

Iyoki had a 143 two-day total and qualified for the 2003 Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Professional Championship, Oct. 23 to 26 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.



BASEBALL

• Mililani advances to West Zone: TJ Escrito, Waylen Sing Chow and Jared Nagai each had two hits, and Mililani beat Maui, 6-4, to win the P.O.N.Y. League Pony Division (13-14) State Championship yesterday at Pilila'au Park in Wai'anae.

Maui's Kona Plunkett hit two home runs and Kalehua Moniz added two doubles.

Maui beat KAC, 10-4, earlier yesterday to advance to the championship.

Mililani advances to the West Zone Tournament, Aug. 2 to 9 in Fullerton, Calif.

• 'Aiea loses: Bakersfield scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat 'Aiea, 3-2, in the Cal Ripken 10-under Regional Tournament yesterday at Kingsburg, Calif.

The loss was the first for the 'Aiea team, which managed just one hit in six innings.

'Aiea will play in a semifinal game early today, with the winner advancing to the championship game later in the day.

In Sunday's game, 'Aiea scored 12 runs over four innings, including eight in the third and fourth, to beat Arizona, 12-2.

Ryan Cortez, Ryan Yamane and Tiras Koon each hit doubles in the four-inning game, with Yamane and Koon also going 2 for 2 at the plate.
