AUNTIE ALICE KULOLOIO, a revered kupuna and healer who spent much of her later years engaged in Native Hawaiian activism, died Tuesday morning at her Kahului home. She was 88. See story.

VELMA "VAL" SOUZA, 75, of Oakland, Calif., formerly of the Big Island and O'ahu, died July 4, 2003. Born in Ninole, Hawai'i. A former Leahi Hospital licensed practical nurse; owner of Leonardo's and Jubilee night clubs, Oakland; founder of the In Memory Foundation, which helped those, predominately AIDS patients and parents of young children, who couldn't afford funeral costs; and an orchid enthusiast. Survived by sisters, Marian Cinco, Veronica Schweitzer and Leonetta Kila and Colette Davis; brother, Toby. Mainland service held; private Hawai'i service Sunday. Burial on O'ahu.
