UH professor recognized

Professor Thomas Klobe of the University of Hawai'i art department has been awarded the Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community from UH-Manoa. The award recognizes a faculty member whose intellectual leadership and academic expertise have led to the improvement of the community.

Klobe is honored for his service as director of the UH Art Gallery and his longtime commitment to Hawai'i's art and cultural institutions and organizations.

Klobe also will receive a $1,000 gift from the University of Hawai'i Foundation.


Castle senior is first recipient

Castle High School senior Sean Connelly has received the inaugural NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award from the NFIB Education Foundation. The award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.

Connelly plans to use the $1,000 scholarship to attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.


National honor for two from Isles

Mary Anne Tecson Jandoc, a recent graduate of Hawai'i Pacific University, has been named a United States Collegiate Award Winner by the United States Achievement Academy. Jandoc attended HPU's school of nursing and graduated summa cum laude.

'Aliamanu Elementary School student Tiara Thomas was named a United States National Award Winner by the academy.


Iolani student at conference

Krystal Ching, a student at Iolani School, has been selected to attend the National Student Leadership Conference on International Diplomacy this summer. The conference in Washington, D.C., is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Ching will be among 1,500 students from across the country to attend the 11-day program.


Mililani Scout to study Civil War

Jennifer Holowecki of Mililani has been selected to represent The Girl Scout Council of Hawaii at the Bonnets and Battlefields conference in Gettysburg, Pa.

As a participant, Holowecki will learn about American lifestyles of the 1860s and the role of women during the Civil War.


Kohala student among leaders

Raymond Kanehailua Jr. of Kohala High School has been selected to attend the National Association of Student Councils National Conference this summer in Lancaster, N.Y.

The conference will focus on turning students into leaders of their schools and communities. Kanehailua will be among 1,800 student council leaders attending the five-day conference.
