$50,000 from Kahanamoku Foundation

Advertiser Staff

Nearly $50,000 in scholarships and grants were awarded by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation this week.

The foundation's mission statement is "to financially support the development of individuals and organizations which perpetuate the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku." To that end, goals include contributing "to the growth and development of athletics in Hawai'i" and assisting in "preserving, perpetuating and developing sports which have a special cultural or historical significance to Hawai'i."

More than $27,000 in scholarships were awarded to high school seniors. A similar total of athletic grants, awarded quarterly, were also given to help athletes compete away from Hawai'i.

The annual Duke's Ho'olaule'a, Aug. 22 to 24, will celebrate his birthday in Waikiki. There will be a Beach Boy Celebration, lei making, historical walks, surfboard water polo, an ocean swim and Waterman Challenge.

For more information on the celebration, grants and the foundation, call 526-4888 or see dukefoundation.org.
