HOLES IN ONE
Paying penance for an ace

- Hickam Par 3
- Hole No. 7, 130 yards, 8-iron
On Sunday, I was supposed to attend Mass; I was diverted to Hickam for a quick, unsanctified outing instead!
I birdied the second hole, parred No. 3 and wholly messed up on the fifth and sixth holes.
Frustrated, I steeled my nerves and resumed play, rationalizing forgiveness from God later.
A miracle occurred on No. 7 as the ball sailed and took route toward the pin and then disappeared.
In the haze of excitement, a friend submitted the news, which was to be closely guarded. The Honolulu Advertiser revealed my stealth whereabouts to the world (and my wife!) on that fateful Sunday.
Today, I find myself in deep kim chee. My short-lived memory of this implausible feat has turned into an arduous road toward penance.
