Three from Hawai'i earn national berths

Advertiser Staff

Maui's Bobbi Kokx and Desiree Ting, and Kamehameha Schools junior Mari Chun qualified for the fifth U.S. Golf Association Women's State Team Championship Monday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The national tournament will be Sept. 16-18 at Wellesley Country Club in Massachusetts. The Hawai'i State Women's Golf Foundation will help defray travel expenses by giving $1,000 to each player.

Kokx, an elementary school teacher in Kihei, shot 4-under-par 71, while Ting was at even-par 75 and Chun shot 78.

Kokx defeated Chun in the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship last month. Ting was a finalist two years ago.

Hong 16th at Junior PGA

Honolulu's Lindsay Hong finished 16th in the girls division and Lihue's Chris Caycayon tied for 28th in the boys at the Westfield Junior PGA Championship last week in Ohio.

The tournament features the junior champions from each of the PGA of America's 41 sections.

Spain's Emma Cabrera won the girls with a 72-hole score of 3-under-par 281. Hong shot rounds of 78-74-74-77 for a 303 total. Oklahoma's Phillip Bryan won the boys with a 279 total, while Caycayon shot 79-76-74-68—297.
