Richard H. Gray, 85, ex-Honsador owner

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

Richard H. Gray, former owner and president of Honsador Lumber Co., died July 21. He was 85.

GRAY
Gray was born in County Cavan, Ireland, and he moved to Hawai'i as a teenager. He attended the University of Hawai'i and later served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II.

In addition to heading Honsador Lumber, Gray served as president of the Pacific Hardwoods Association, and was a member of the Hawai'i Executive Council and the advisory board for YMCA Camp Erdman.

Longtime friend and attorney Bill Swope said Gray was an excellent businessman.

"He was just a kind-hearted, generous man with a good business sense, and loved his family," Swope said. "He believed in loyalty — that was a strong virtue of him: Someone who was loyal to him, he was loyal to them."

Gray is survived by his wife, Maris Chillingworth Gray; son, Richard D.; daughters, Sharon Solmssen, Diane, and Deborah Sou; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Service will be private. Donations may be made to any charity or to YMCA Camp H.R. Erdman, 69-385 Farrington Highway, Waialua, HI 96791.
