Sakai unbeaten at wrestling tourney

Debbi Sakai, a 2003 graduate of Moanalua High, won all four of her matches at the Asics Junior National Wrestling Championships yesterday in Fargo, N.D.

Sakai advanced to the semifinals in the 110-pound division. She is seeking a sweep of the three national championships for women wrestlers, having already won the USGWA High School Championship and USA Fila National Team Trials.

Other wrestlers from Hawai'i competing in the junior nationals with their records and weight divisions in parentheses: Danyelle Hedin (3-1, 119), Shyla Iokia (2-2, 119), Ku'ui'ini Johnson (2-1, 138), Selina Perez (1-2, 150) and Ashley Truchan (0-2, 165).

GOLF

Sasada surprises: Makena pro Brian Sasada shot a 2-under-par 70 Thursday to win the Maui Tournament Players event by one over PGA Tour pro Duffy Waldorf.

The tournament was played at Makena South.

Paul Hellum came in third with even par. O'ahu's Kimo Greene took the Senior Division with 74 and the team of Kirk Nelson and Sasada topped the best ball event with 68.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Warriors sweep: The Hawai'i Warriors beat Massachusetts, 10-0, and Florida, 7-5, yesterday in the AAU Nationals (11-under) Tournament at Orlando, Fla.
