Marukai Corp. is one of the retailers that has been successful at developing dollar stores.
The parent of the 99¢ stores opened its fourth location yesterday inside a Sack-N-Save at the Stadium Marketplace in Honolulu.
Marukai said its dollar stores have performed above expectations since its first location opened in Hawai'i five years ago at the Ward Gateway Center near Sports Authority.
The two others that followed in Waipahu Town Center and Windward Mall opened to long lines.
Unlike dollar stores on the Mainland, Marukai stocks more Asian items such as rice bowls and Hello Kitty, but also offers standard household items and the like.
The 6,000-square-foot Marukai 99¢ Superstore will be the first to open inside a Sack-N-Save, marking the first joint venture between the two companies.
The goal is to make shopping for groceries and dollar-store items more convenient.
Shoppers can pay for purchases from both stores at one register. The dollar store will carry more than 5,000 items.
