That's what so many people say about their beloved companion animals. We celebrate our pets' birthdays, dress them up in aloha wear, cook special homemade meals, buy them matching collars and leashes, and provide them with excellent veterinary care.
At the end of the day, our pets sleep comfortably in designer pet beds and custom cages.
"We love hearing about how people honor their pets," said Pamela Burns, Hawaiian Humane Society president. "Since the Hawaiian Humane Society is dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond, we encourage these marvelous expressions of love."
A wonderful way to honor your pet is by placing photos in the 2004 "Pets in Paradise" calendar. Entry fees help care for lost, injured and homeless dogs at the society.
With the deadline for photo entries only four days away, photographer Stan Wright, one of the calendar photo judges, offers tips for taking better photos.
"When I'm reviewing the entries," said Wright, "I look for the photos that grab my attention immediately. To get the look you want from your pet, get up close, focus, and be ready to snap the photo when you say 'treat' or whistle."
Sometimes a winning photo is an accident but more often it happens when you are prepared.
"Get down to eye level with your pet, lie on the floor and wait," said Wright. "Be ready to capture that picture-perfect look."
Digital prints may be submitted, along with four-by-six-inch horizontal prints.
The entry form provides details.
"Last year we received two-thirds of our entries in the last two weeks of July," Burns said. "We look forward to seeing lots and lots of wonderful photos between now and July 31. We love honoring pets on the calendar's cover, full pages and collage pages. This 13-month calendar is truly a special remembrance of Hawai'i's brightest stars."
