Hiker lived close to nature

By Karen Blakeman

Daniel C. Levey, 19, would take his mother to Sandy Beach in the early morning.

"We'd watch the sun rise and take pictures," Joyce Levey said. "We'd watch the little crabs, scurrying sideways along the beach."

Daniel, who died Monday when he fell from the Mau'umae Trail, built his life around nature, his mother said. The 2001 Punahou graduate biked and ran marathons as well as hiked.

Shortly after Daniel returned to Hawai'i Kai, the University of Oregon junior and biology major bought a mouse. A pregnant mouse, Joyce Levey said.

Two weeks later "Sweetheart" gave birth to 12. Joyce wasn't crazy about having a baker's dozen of rodents, but Daniel would happily watch Sweetheart and her litter for hours.

Daniel had a motto, his mother said: "If you want to feel rich, just think of all the things you have that money can't buy." Joyce said he wrote it out for her and she put it on the refrigerator. It was still there yesterday.

Daniel is survived by parents, Norm and Joyce; sister, Sara; and grandfather, Philip Cassen.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary. Visitation to follow at the family home until 7 p.m. tomorrow, and also from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Arrangements by Williams Funeral Services.

Contributions may be made in memory of Daniel Levey to the Chabad of Hawaii, 419 Atkinson Drive, Honolulu, HI 96814; or to the Chabad of Eugene, 1307 East 19th Ave., Eugene, OR 97403.
