Hawaiian Electric Co. technicians were expected to work late into the night or early into this morning in La'ie after a truck hit a utility pole. As the pole fell, it took down two other poles with it, spilling electrical wires onto the road.
The truck crashed about 10:30 a.m. yesterday, near the Cackle Fresh Egg Farm at 55-730 Kamehameha Highway, police said. The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and was not seriously injured, police said.
Crews worked throughout the day to fix the problem, while police blocked the road in both directions.
HECO spokesman Bruce Benson said that 2,700 people lost electricity yesterday, and 20 still were without power late last night.
