Hawaiian Air flights delayed

By Ron Staton
Associated Press

Hawaiian Airlines flights were delayed yesterday after the airline's computer system went down.

Airline spokesman Keoni Wagner said 80 percent of the airline's data and telecommunications lines at its headquarters near Honolulu International Airport went down around 5:15 a.m., causing delays throughout the system.

The problem stemmed from a failure of Verizon Hawaii data lines, he said.

Verizon spokeswoman Ann Nishida said the power supply "tripped" at Verizon's facility near the airport. The cause was not immediately known, but it could have been lightning or a commercial power failure, she said. The power supply was restored about 9:20 a.m.

Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Bruce Benson said HECO had no other problems in the area.

Hawaiian Airlines flights to Hawai'i were kept on the ground on the West Coast until Verizon restored circuits and the airline's computer system was again running, Wagner said. The flights were delayed about four hours, he said.

Flights to the Mainland were expected to be delayed, but not as long, Wagner said. Interisland flights were running about an hour behind, but the airline hoped to get back to its regular schedule during the day.

Aloha Airlines operations were not affected, according to spokesman Stu Glauberman.
