Pro, director hired for Central O'ahu facility

Hawai'i Pacific Tennis Foundation hired former Hawai'i Pacific All-American Stefan Pampulov as Head Tennis Professional and Alex Smith as Facility Director for the Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

Pampulov will oversee the foundation's instructional programs. He is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association and has more than 10 years of coaching experience. Before coming to Hawai'i, Pampulov was head tennis professional in an Austrian club.

Pampulov's father and uncle played Davis Cup for Bulgaria.

Smith will manage the daily affairs of the complex, including supervising administration, maintenance, scheduling and concession activities. He is also president of HI-5 Sports management company.

Two fall at nationals: Kane'ohe's Colin Fujishige and Kailua's Skyler Tateishi lost in the second round of the U.S. Tennis Association Boys 14 Super National Clay Court Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Fujishige defaulted because of illness in his match against Colorado's Kellen Damico, the No. 3 seed. Fujishige trailed 3-1 in the third set. He lost the first, 6-1, then won the second 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 7-4.

J. Eric Turner, from North Carolina, beat Tateishi, 6-2, 6-1. Tateishi lost in the round of 64 in doubles, falling to the ninth-seeded team, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Fall lesson schedule: The fall schedule of USA Tennis Lessons begins Sept. 22. Registration deadline is Sept. 10.

The low-cost lessons are for novice beginners and intermediates and will be offered at public parks on O'ahu. For a complete listing of sites and times please visit the HPS section website at hawaii.usta.com or call 955-6696 (ext. 25).

Senior League concludes: The USTA/Hawai'i Pacific SectionÊSenior League Sectional Championship will be Aug. 2 and 3 in Kona.

Matches will be held at the facilities of the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort, Royal Kona Resort, King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel and the Keauhou-Kona Surf & Racquet Club.

Thirty district winning teams from West Hawai'i, East Hawai'i, O'ahu, Maui, and Kaua'i will vie for the opportunity to advance to USTA National Championships.

Matches begin at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Fernandez honored: The Big Island's Hermann Fernandez is the recipient of the 2003 USA Tennis National Tennis Teachers Conference Scholarship for the Hawai'i Pacific Section.

The 33rd annual USA Tennis Teachers Conference will be Aug. 23-26 at Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City and USTA National Tennis Center, site of the U.S. Open.

In addition to attending the conference, Fernandez will have the opportunity to participate as a volunteer at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day, the kick-off event for the Open.

The scholarship is provided to a coach who has significantly contributed to the development and growth of the local community USA Tennis Programs.

For more than a decade, Fernandez has devoted his free time to teaching kids and adults tennis in North Kohala. He teaches at Kamehameha Park, where he has created the Kamehameha Community Tennis Association, and coaches at Kohala High School.

Villegas to camp: Stephanie Villegas, a Kamehameha Schools student and member of the Kailua Community Tennis Association's National Junior Tennis League, has been selected to attend the 2003 Invitational Tennis Leader Camp this summer at the American and George Washington universities in Washington, D.C.

Villegas is one of 32 from NJTL programs and chapters across the nation to get a scholarship.

Selection was based on positive attitude and leadership qualities.

The camp will provide sessions emphasizing character and leadership development, sportsmanship, physical fitness, proper nutrition and other healthy attitudes.
