The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, federal legislation passed last year in the aftermath of corporate scandals and often considered the most far-reaching crackdown on corporate fraud since the Great Depression will be discussed at the Corporate Governance Conference presented next Monday by the University of Hawai'i business school. Disclosures and certifications required by the act as well as directors' fiduciary responsibilities will be among topics addressed.
The conference, intended for investors, officers and directors of public companies, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki. Among speakers will be Michael E. Hollywood producer Chris Lee will speak on the rise of creative media in Hawai'i at the annual N.H. Paul Chung Memorial Lecture. The lecture, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Tapa Ballroom 1 of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, is part of a series held in honor of Paul Chung, founder of the Pacific Asian Management Institute. Lee, a graduate of Iolani School, is former president of production for pictures at TriStar and Columbia and founding co-director of the Cinematic and Digital Arts Program at the University of Hawai'i. The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU offers free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., offer advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small-business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE.
