Traffic accidents kill 2 statewide

By Allison Schaefers

Two people were killed in traffic accidents in the state yesterday, officials said.

Speed and alcohol may have played a role in a crash on the H-1 Freeway that killed a 26-year-old Pearl City man early yesterday morning and seriously injured two others, police said.

The Pearl City man died on the roadway about three-tenths of a mile west of Peltier Avenue after rapidly changing lanes and rear-ending another car, said Honolulu Sgt. John Agno.

The impact of the collision, which occurred about 4:25 a.m., pushed the second car into the right road barrier where it overturned. The Pearl City man's Mitsubishi hit the left road barrier. He was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining multiple head injuries, Agno said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office has not released his name.

The 39-year-old driver of the second car and an 18-year-old passenger from the Pearl City man's car were taken to The Queen's Medical Center. Both were listed in serious condition, Agno said.

The man who was killed was not wearing seat belt, Agno said.

In a Maui accident early yesterday morning, a Kahului man was killed and two passengers riding in his car were seriously injured.

Kenneth Agudo,18, was headed toward Wailuku on Kahului Beach Road about 2 a.m. when he tried to overtake another vehicle and lost control of his car, police said.

Agudo was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

Two other Kahului residents, Lucille Fortuna, 18, and Eray LaGran, 25, were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.

Police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors.
