Students help United Way

O'ahu students have raised more than $50,000 for the Aloha United Way fund-raising campaign Student Aloha. AUW honored public and private schools that raised the most money. The public schools are Aliamanu Elementary School, Pearl Ridge Elementary School and Moanalua High School. The honored private schools are Saint Francis School, Mid-Pacific Institute and Sacred Hearts Academy.



8 children win Hokule'a rides

Eight children recently won a ride on the Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe Hokule'a by submitting drawings that depicted ways of caring for the Hawai'i environment.

Master navigator Nainoa Thompson and other society crew members accompanied the winners, who each brought a parent: Matthew Byers, 10, Alvah Scott Elementary; Mary Chong, 8, Ka'ahumanu Elementary; Kara Doles, 11, Punahou School; Chaz Inouye, 8, St. John Vianney School; Lauren Shitanishi, 8, Wilson Elementary; Alana Siaris, 9, Manana Elementary; Marc Viernes, 11, Kapolei Elementary; and Darcy Yogi, 9, Kailua Elementary.

The society and Zippy's Restaurants co-sponsored the Keiki Drawing Contest.



WINDWARD

Lanikai parcels plan sea walls

New sea walls are planned for two contiguous properties at 1301A and 1318 Mokulua Drive in Lanikai. The concrete-rubble masonry walls will be landward of the certified shoreline along the 150-foot frontage of the two properties and within the 40-foot setback. A draft environmental assessment has been filed with the Office of Environmental Quality Control. Public comment on the project is due by Aug. 22. Lu'au to mark kahu's birthday

The Lili'uokalani Protestant Church's annual lu'au Aug. 2 in Hale'iwa will celebrate the 92nd birthday of Kahu Sam Saffery. Entertainment will be provided by the Lili'uokalani Church Choir led by Eileen Hirota, plus a number of other noted performers, including slack-key artists and singers. The cost is $15 under the tent; $12.50 take-out. Serving times run from 1 to 4 p.m.; 11a.m. to 3 p.m. for take-out. Call 637-9364.



NEIGHBOR ISLAND

Illegal logging results in fine

HILO, Hawai'i — Years of illegal logging of koa trees at Kahuku Ranch on the Big Island will cost Damon Estate $254,000.

The Board of Land and Natrual Resources also fined Steve's Ag Services Ltd. $1.3 million for logging the 712 koa trees. The work was done without a permit in conservation-designated areas.
