Halau Hula Olana, the Pearl City school led by kumu hula Olana and Howard Ai, claimed six of the top awards at the three-day Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition that concluded Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.
The halau was represented by the two winners of the soloist titles: Miss Keiki Hula Mariah Limatoc and Master Keiki Hula Braden Clark.
In group competition, the school split top honors with Hula Halau 'O Kamuela, the school based in Kalihi and Waimanalo and taught by Kau'i Kamana'o.
Hula Halau 'O Kamuela took first in the girls' (kaikamahine) competition in kahiko (ancient), 'auana (modern) and overall categories, while Halau Hula Olana swept those awards in the boys' (keiki kane) division.
The Pearl City group additionally won an award for Hawaiian language in the keiki division, in which only the children are chanting. The award in the halau division, in which the kumu and other adults also can chant, went to Joan S. Lindsey Hula Studio, also of Pearl City.
