THE LEFT LANE
Iz tune used in ad for Sony digital camera

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Bruddah Iz is at it again — helping pitch products with his music.

The late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Henehene Kou 'Aka" tune, off his "Facing Future" CD, is heard on a national Sony TV spot aimed at the Gen Y audience. The tune is heard on a Sony commercial featuring a blue space-alien character, Plato, as he discovers the new palm-sized Sony Cyber-Shot U Digital camera. It will be widely seen on MTV, ESPN and Comedy Central, through August.

The TV exposure follows on Iz's musical success in commercials for eToys and in European TV spots for Austrian sugar. His "Over the Rainbow" has been prominently used on TV ("ER") and film ("Finding Forrester") productions.

Getting a jump on your exercise routine

Interested in starting a jump-rope routine? There is one caveat: Ten minutes of jumping rope, if you're not used to it, can seem like several times that. Here are tips to get you on your way:

  • Stretch your calves before and after the workout. Otherwise, the next day you may have a hard time walking.
  • Wear cross-training shoes.
  • To determine whether a rope is the right length, step on it with both feet. The handles should reach your armpits. The more skilled you get, the shorter it can be.
  • Start slowly, even if you're in shape. Try for a minute or two, then rest and stretch your calves.
  • Don't bother to lift your knees high; it can be a waste of energy. Ditto for "double bouncing" as you jump.
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides.

Steely Dan to be back, Jack, to Hawai'i again

Donald Fagan
Rikki, don't lose that Ticketmaster number. You definitely don't wanna call anybody up just yet, but be warned. Steely Dan has announced on its official site, www.steelydan.com, that it's coming to Hawai'i for a couple of October concerts. The Web site's tour section lists a Honolulu date, Oct. 11 at the Blaisdell Arena, and an Oct. 10 show on Maui (no venue listed). Ticket prices and sale dates were not immediately available. The perennially popular duo of part-time Maui resident Walter Becker and Donald Fagan is touring behind what is only their ninth album, "Everything Must Go," released this year.
