QUICK BITES
New looks, updated menu

By Wanda A. Adams

The 39-year-old Furusato Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki has become a "pop Japanese-style restaurant" with the tricky name, "YOUME.N" The interior concept was designed by Kiyoshi, an artist who did the colorful umbrellas for L'Uraku.

Eddie's Burgers & Frozen Custard in Kaimuki is celebrating a first anniversary with an updated menu. The featured burger this month is grilled mushroom and mozzarella, there's a quarter-pound Vienna Beef Chicago-style hot dog, new beer-battered fish and chips and a Buffalo chicken sandwich, and, as a heart-healthy choice, tuna rolls with or without bread.

Grab free goodies, all made in Hawai'i

Island folks love trade shows for the free goodies, the opportunity to amass shopping bags and the new things they can tell their friends about. One of the favorites is the 2003 Made in Hawaii Festival, set for Aug. 15 through 17 at the Neal Blaisdell Center. It is sponsored by the Hawaii Food Industry Association and will feature products from more than 400 exhibitors, many of them food products, so attendees will be well-fed as they browse.

Among the food purveyors: sweet potato and taro chips from Hawaiian Chip Co. on O'ahu; lavender culinary items from Nanea a'o Kula on Maui; 'ono cookies from Kauai Kookie Co.; and coffee products from Kona Joe Coffee. There also will be chef demonstrations featuring, among others, Alma Arcano of Hy's Steak House, Marcia Cades of Kaka'ako Kitchen, Fred DeAngelo of Tiki's Grill & Bar, Mark Ellman of Maui Tacos, Elmer Guzman of Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant, Matt Johnson of Sergio's and Kevin Tate of Kevin's Two Boots.
