Man shot by Maui officer had gun

Associated Press

WAILUKU, Maui — A man who was shot by a Maui police officer Friday was carrying a loaded semiautomatic pistol, police said.

Police Lt. Glenn Cuomo said investigators have no record of the weapon being registered to the wounded man.

Police said officers shot the 25-year-old Kula man after repeatedly warning him and trying to take his pistol while he sat in a parked car on Pueo Drive on Hawaiian Homes land.

The man, who was in the passenger seat, grabbed the handgun from beneath the seat as police approached and spoke to the woman in the driver's seat, police said.

The man is in guarded condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center with a gunshot wound in his right shoulder.

Cuomo said charges are pending.

The car has been impounded and will be searched. Investigators are trying to determine the ownership of the car.

The woman in the car was not arrested.
