KIHEI, Maui The landmark Suda Store a popular stop for construction workers and canoe paddlers for 39 years is the latest mom-and-pop establishment on Maui to call it quits.
The shop closed its doors yesterday, the third such Maui store to do so within a month that also saw the Shishido Manju store in Wailuku and Waikapu Stop end their business.
"We're going to miss this place," said Suda Store manager Roy Suda, who attributed the closing to a less than brisk economy and shoppers' increasing preference for supermarkets and big-box stores.
"We can't compete with them," said Suda, 61. "Our hours are long and it's not worth it."
The Suda family ran the store since 1964.
