Advertiser Staff

KIM WILLOUGHBY

For the second consecutive year, Hawai'i senior left-side hitter Kim Willoughby has earned Western Athletic Conference preseason Player of the Year honors in a poll by conference coaches.

Hawai'i, which was picked to finish first in the WAC in 2003, led all schools with four players on the all-WAC preseason team with senior middle blocker Lauren Duggins, senior middle blocker Maja Gustin and senior left-side hitter Lily Kahumoku.

Fresno State, which was picked to finish second, placed two players. Eight of the 10 WAC schools placed at least one player on the preseason team with Boise State, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Rice, San Jose State and UTEP each placing one.

Willoughby, from Napoleonville, La., was the 2001 and 2002 WAC Player of the Year, as well as a first-team all-WAC selection.

Willoughby, Kahumoku and Duggins were also 2002 AVCA All-Americans.

Willoughby led the WAC in kills (688) and kills per game (6.31).

The volleyball season begins Aug. 22 when Hawai'i plays in the NACWAA/State Farm Women's Volleyball Classic along with Florida, Kansas State and defending NCAA champion Southern California.

The tournament will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center.
