Man charged in auto theftA 31-year-old man driving a stolen car who was involved in a traffic collision Monday that injured three people was charged yesterday with second-degree robbery, auto theft, three counts of failure to render aid, and first-degree negligence resulting in injury.
Steven Adams, who has no permanent local address, is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday at District Court.
According to a police report filed at District Court, Adams allegedly stole a maroon Lexus that a woman had parked with the engine running in front of Frog’s House Restaurant at 1604 Kalakaua Ave. The woman, 52, was in the restaurant to pick up a food order and saw Adams get into the car. She ran outside and yelled at Adams to get out of her car but he allegedly drove forward. The woman was struck by the car and suffered minor leg injuries.
Adams allegedly drove the car east on Philip Street and then mauka onto Punahou Street. The car’s owner and a witness followed Adams in another car and saw the collision between the stolen Lexus and a Dodge Neon at the intersection of Punahou and South King streets at 3:40 p.m.
A Makiki man and two children — a 7-year-old boy and girl, 11 — in the Neon were seriously injured. Adams fled the scene on foot and was arrested nearby at 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Full Gospel Church at 1541 Young St.
Five arrested after assault
Police yesterday arrested three men — two of whom have San Francisco addresses — a woman and a juvenile on suspicion that they assaulted and robbed a man of cash and jewelry on Ke‘eaumoku and Makaloa streets. The suspects were arrested at 3:30 p.m., about 25 minutes after the robbery was reported, at Makaloa and Pi‘ikoi streets.
Second-degree robbery charges are pending against the men, ages 29, 27 and 24, and 19-year-old woman.
Gunman wanted in 2 bank heists
Police believe the gunman who robbed American Savings Bank at 95-221 Kipapa Drive in Mililani yesterday held up the same branch on June 26 wearing a Halloween mask. In both robberies, the suspect used a silver-colored pistol and was undeterred by people being in the back.
In June, 12 people were in the bank when the man entered with the gun drawn. Yesterday, 15 people were in the bank when he boldly went to the front of the line, pushed a customer aside and demanded only hundred dollar bills from a teller, police said.
Yesterday’s robbery was reported at 10:55 a.m. The man’s face was covered by a black T-shirt with eye holes cut out and camouflage hat, shirt and pants. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, which included a dye pack that exploded.
Police recovered the camouflage clothing nearby.
Yesterday’s bank robbery was the fifth this month on O‘ahu and the 22nd of the year.
